GEM MINING AT TWEETSIE RAILROAD IN BLOWING ROCK, NC

WHAT THE EXPERIENCE IS LIKE

Gem mining takes place on Miners Mountain. Visitors purchase a bucket of ore, carry it to the mining troughs and wash the material through a screen to uncover natural gemstones. Every paid bucket is prepared so the miner finds gemstones. Free gold panning is offered nearby and is included with regular admission.

LOCATION AND ACCESS

The mining area is at the top of Miners Mountain near the playground, Deer Park Zoo, rides and the Company Store. Guests may ride the open-air chairlift, walk the trail or use the continuously operating bus from the Tweetsie Palace. The bus can carry wheelchairs and strollers.

HOURS AND OPERATING SEASON

Regular daytime operations run from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tweetsie Railroad is open Saturdays and Sundays from April 4 through May 31, plus Memorial Day Monday; five days a week from June 1 through August 8, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays; and Saturdays and Sundays from August 9 through November 1, plus Labor Day Monday.

Ghost Train operates Friday and Saturday nights from September 25 through October 31, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tweetsie Christmas runs on select evenings from November 27 through December 30, from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. Miners Mountain and several daytime attractions are not open during the nighttime events.

ADMISSION AND PARKING

Regular daytime admission is $65 for ages 13 and older, $45 for children ages 3–12, and free for children age 2 and younger. Taxes and fees are included. Parking is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Golden Rail season passes are $150 for adults and $110 for children and include unlimited regular daytime admission plus pass benefits.

COST AND PAYMENT

Gold panning is free. Gem-mining buckets are an additional purchase and are not included with park admission or a season pass. Bucket prices depend on the amount and type of material selected and are posted at the Gem Mine. Tweetsie is cashless, so bring a credit card, debit card or mobile wallet; cash-to-card kiosks are available in the park.

AGES AND SUPERVISION

Gem mining works well for children, teens and adults. Younger children usually need help lifting the bucket, holding the screen steady and identifying stones. The troughs can splash, so an adult should stay close to small children.

ACCESSIBILITY

The activity is reached by the Miners Mountain bus or the walking trail when the chairlift is not suitable. Guests need enough reach and hand control to scoop, shake and rinse material, although a companion can assist. Standard wheelchairs and strollers can ride on the rear platform of the bus.

WEATHER AND CLOTHING

The troughs are outdoors and may pause during lightning, heavy rain or maintenance. Wear clothes that can tolerate water and grit, closed-toe shoes with traction, and sunscreen. A small towel or resealable bag is useful for wet hands and found gemstones.

HOW LONG TO ALLOW

Plan about 20–40 minutes for one bucket, with extra time when several children share the experience or when the mining area is busy.

TIPS FOR A BETTER VISIT

  • Visit earlier in the day for a quieter trough and more time to examine the stones.
  • Keep the screen level so small gemstones do not wash away.
  • Use the nearby free gold-panning activity before or after the paid bucket.
  • Bring a small container for carrying gemstones home.

WHO THIS ACTIVITY IS BEST FOR

Gem mining is especially good for elementary-age children, rock collectors and families who want a calm hands-on break between rides and shows.
